📖 Story time

My first interview for an "internet" job was a front end developer. I was interviewed by the lovely Dave Gill

Excep
t this wasn't the usual terrifying interview where I bluffed about intangibles like passion, hard work and determination to get a job I needed but didn't want. It was my first time chatting with someone in real life about CSS & HTML, and I really wanted it. My nerves evaporated.

I can still recall the first day in that office. Dave showed me a weird CSS bug they were having on an old Internet Explorer version. Off I went. A puzzle to be solved.

Later on when I was starting to learn Javascript I would often ask a question of Dave. He'd just ask me a question! What an annoying habit! 🤣 I benefited enormously from his skill as a former teacher.

It was a fun time to be making things for the internet. CSS was cool, interesting and not all figured out. I hoovered up advice from people like Harry Roberts, Jonathan Snook, Chris Coyier & Lea Verou. Being really good at CSS was in-demand.

What a great team we built there, shout out to Sam Bisby, Kirsty, Benjamin Carroll , Joe & Emma Bramley

It was a great feeling to discover that after jumping into the water, I could swim!
